A large study of the taxi market showed that the most popular individual passenger transportation in Singapore-where every second resident uses a taxi more than once a month, and the total volume of passengers transported in this way is 10%. The closest to Singapore on these indicators was new York (8%), and the smallest role of taxis among the studied cities in terms of passenger traffic-in Paris and London, 1.6 and 2%, respectively.
Moscow is not allocated for 3.3% of the volume of traffic; every third citizen is actively using a taxi. At the same time, the maximum share of residents who rarely or do not use a taxi is in Tokyo and Istanbul. There is only one fifth to the sixth causes the driver more than once a month for the same 3.3 percent of the volume, as in Moscow.
In the case of Tokyo, this is a combination of two factors: unprecedented high cost and shortage of cars. The latter was the result of legislative restrictions on the number of licenses-the average filing time when ordering through the most popular application is more than 15 minutes (in Moscow — 5), and more than half of the cases do not find a free car nearby! And in Istanbul, new licenses have not been issued since 1991, while the city's population has grown by 2.5 times. Therefore, there is an unsatisfied demand for cars and a huge market of illegal immigrants with low quality service.
With the advent of Uber in Istanbul for the first time in 15 years, the growth of the cost of resold licenses stopped. But with the ban of the aggregator in 2017, prices went up again — to the delight of holders, among whom are mainly politicians and businessmen. In new York, aggregators are allowed, albeit with restrictions. Therefore, the prices for licenses there are going down since 2013 — they have already collapsed 8 times. Because of this, more than 1,000 drivers who invested in the "medallion" at the peak of its price went bankrupt.
Taxis rule the night
Two — thirds of cars on the roads of London at night and about half in Moscow from 01:00 to 05:00-taxi. Such interesting statistics were found by experts in the study of the composition of the traffic flow depending on the time of day. But in Singapore and new York at night, most residents prefer personal transport. But in new York more than anywhere else from the studied megacities like to take a taxi to the airports-this type of transport accounts for 39% of transfers! For comparison, in Moscow, this figure is two times less.
The dynamics of the ratio of private cars, taxis and public transport in Moscow is interesting. From 2011 to 2018, travel by private car declined by an impressive 10 percentage points, from 38 to 28. Public transport rose from 62% to 69%, and taxis received their 3% of traffic. This is a bright result of the policy of the Metropolitan authorities to expel personal vehicles from the city.
London and new York are also stable. Despite the efforts of the authorities of the English capital, from 2011 to 2018, the share of trips by personal cars decreased by only 2 percentage points, and from a weighty 51%. They went to the asset of public transport, and the taxi as were 2%, and remained. In new York, on the contrary, 38% of people still drive their cars, and rapidly aging in the absence of sufficient investment, the city transport gave a taxi as much as 4 percentage points: in 2011, the ratio was 58% to 4%, and in 2018 it became 54 to 8.
